How to check python snakeskin is genuine

  • Scale pattern should vary naturally across the hide. A regular, repeating grid pattern means printed or embossed leather, not real skin.
  • Genuine hides have a real size ceiling, roughly 28-60cm at the widest point. A "python" skin advertised much larger than that is worth questioning.
  • Ask what grade you're buying and what the grading is based on. A real supplier can answer specifically, not vaguely.
  • If the price matches cowhide, it's probably cowhide.

Care

  • Store flat or loosely rolled, away from direct sunlight and humidity, until it's ready to be worked.
  • Direct heat and prolonged damp both damage the scales before it's even made into anything.
  • Keep in cool, dry place
  • Avoid direct sunlight & moisture
  • Handle with clean dry hands
  • For long-term storage, use breathable cover (cotton cloth)
